Flipping the Table: 8 Poker Variants

Let's change things up - though we love slots here at Slotto, we just can't resist a game of Poker too. We're not just talking about Texas Hold'em, but a whole load of other Poker variants! Here are some of our favourites!

About Omaha Hold'em

First up, hailing from the 1980's, Omaha Hold'em isn't too different to Texas Hold'em - primarily you have 4 cards in hand instead of 2 and when making a hand, you must use 2 of your cards alongside 3 from the 5 communal cards on the table. It's commonly referred to as a game of the nuts as playing like this can increase the chance of bigger hands showing up, so you like a high-octane game then this could be the one for you!

About Irish Poker

Irish Poker also sees you start out with 4 cards in hand, but after the first 3 communal cards are dealt, you discard 2 and the rest plays like Texas Hold'em!

About Pai Gow Poker

For something totally different, there's Pai Gow Poker - here you're betting against the dealer and you get dealt 7 cards. From these cards you have to make 2 hands - a 5 card high hand and a 2 card low hand. Both hands are played together, and the low hand must not outrank the high hand. If both hands the player has win, then obviously the player wins. If both hands the player has lose, then it's clear that the player loses. The dealer wins any tied hands, but if you win a hand and the other hand is tied or loses, then no money is exchanged (this is known as a 'push'). Oh, and one more thing, you'd be playing with a 53 card deck that includes one Joker. This usually substitutes for an Ace except when finishing a Straight or a Flush, in which case it is Wild!

About 7 Card Stud

7 Card Stud starts with you being dealt 2 cards face down and 1 face up - from these 3 cards, you decide whether or not you'll play the hand. If you continue to play the entire round, you'll dealt another 3 face up cards and 1 face down card, from which you'll have to try and make the best 5 card hand that you can.

About Razz

Razz is basically the same as 7 Card Stud, except the lowest hand wins, with the lowest being a wheel - A,2,3,4,5.

About 5 Card Stud

5 Card Stud is similar to 7 Card Stud, except the only card dealt face down is the first and there are 2 cards dealt out in the first betting round.

About Abyssinia

Abyssinia is basically the same as 5 Card Stud, except that there are 2 prize pots on each hand - one for the highest hand, and one for the lowest.

About Badugi

Badugi begins with each player being dealt 4 cards, face down in a clockwise direction from the dealer. Then, starting with the player left of the dealer, players state how many cards they'd like to discard, then those players can draw that many. You can discard your entire hand or discard none - discarding none is called 'standing pat'. When everyone has discarded (or not), a betting round begins - this means there are 4 rounds of betting throughout, the first after the initial hand is bet then three rounds with the chance to exchange. The winning hand will be the lowest with no cards sharing a rank or suit.
